Silent Running

Art Direction · 3D Design · Animation · Compositing

A title sequence created at Les Gobelins as a reinterpretation of Douglas Trumbull's 1972 science-fiction film Silent Running.

CONCEPT

Silent Running tells the story of a botanist trying to preserve the last remaining plant life aboard a spacecraft. Its slow pace, environmental themes and distinctly 1970s vision of the future became the starting point for our title sequence.

Working as a team, we combined 2D and 3D techniques to create a visual language somewhere between organic forms and retro-futuristic technology. We kept the palette restrained and the movement slow, developing a paper-test animatic before moving into production.

PROCESS

I started by developing the main leaf animation, experimenting with materials and movement to find the balance between an organic form and the technological aesthetic of the film.

Once the visual direction was established, I developed the remaining objects and refined the leaf animation for the final sequence
